“THIS IS WHAT WE ARE TO BECOME! GAZE UPON THE FUTURE OF GNOMEKIND AND TREMBLE AT ITS POWER!”
The words rumble through the sewer cavern as Xarathes towers over the warrior and his allies. The creature’s defensive thorns become the size of swords and his once tiny blade now dwarfs even Faisal’s falchion. The gnome’s eyes are wide with madness and he points to the dark-skinned man even as he addresses his words to Beppo.
“JOIN ME! TAKE YOUR RIGHTFUL PLACE AT THE VANGUARD OF OUR EVOLUTION AS WE CRUSH THE LESSER RACES!”
The bright green ray from the gnome’s finger dissolves armor and flesh alike, but Faisal is able to shrug off the worst of the pain. Through the noise and chaos of the battle, a single thought leaps into the warrior’s mind, as clear as if spoken in a quiet room.
There are others that might reward a strong warrior whose dedication to justice is unwavering.
Faisal glances back at his allies, bloodied and withered from the gnome’s magic. Grim determination spurs the decision as he opens himself up to the offer that has hovered at the edge of his awareness for weeks. The familiar rush of righteous power floods his body, focusing his awareness and wrath on the massive gnome. Heedless of the thorns, acid and electricity surrounding the monstrosity, Faisal leaps forward, swinging his blade as it vibrates with energy.
“Feel the wrath of Divine Justice, creature of Chaos!”
“And how did it feel to taste the gifts of divine service again?”, purrs Lilith, stroking Faisal’s cheek.
The warrior shivers involuntarily. “It was good. Perhaps too good. There was a feeling of power and strength that was not present in the past. It was almost… pleasurable… I am not certain it is a good thing.”
“But you destroyed a great evil, saving your friends and poor Lucinda. How could that be wrong?”
“I… I do not know how to put it into words. In the moment it felt right, but now…”
The young woman interrupts, leaning across the bench to give him a gentle but insistent kiss.
“Carrying out your duty can never be wrong, my dear. But let’s not talk about such dreary subjects right now. You have returned, safe and triumphant, and I wish to celebrate with more enjoyable activities.”
