As Deidre kneels in prayer in the DawnSpire, she hears a crackling and hiss. Opening her eyes, she see the candle flames being drawn into a familiar burning wheel.
Greetings Daughter. How fare you and your devotions?
Deidre is almost too overwhelmed to speak but she stammers out the proper greeting and genuflections.
“I am overwhelmed by the honor Great Mistress, and have striven to purify and sanctify the holy city according to your Divine will.”
And how fares your beloved, Faisal? Is it not as I said? Have I not fulfilled my end of the bargain? Has he expressed he love and desire for you?
“Yes Great Mistress, all is as you have said it would be and more. Faisal loves me and I love him and NO ONE will stand in the way of that love."
True daughter, you demonstrated your devotion to him and me by striking down the Oracle of Saenrae, and even now you plot against Scarlet. Truly your dedication is unquestionable. You have done well and I am greatly pleased. The temple shall soon be dedicated and you shall be my Anointed. There is but a single final task for you to perform, but it shall not be easy.
“Of course Goddess, whatever you command, it shall be done.”
Excellent Daughter, then heed my final commands. Your brethren would have you consecrate my Temple with the remains of the Oracle, but I meant for this place to be Yours, not shared or usurped by the Southerners. And now for the challenge. You must take part in the Investiture yourself, positioning yourself high atop the DawnSpire and while the Investiture is taking place, you must read this scroll. Fear not, falter not and fail not and you will have your greatest triumph over Scarlet. She is weak and self indulgent and no true High Priestess at all and when you are done with this evocation, all will see her weakness and know her for the fraud she is!
A familiar golden scroll appears on the altar in front of Deirdre.
As the Wheel spins, a soft sound, like an escaping breath, reaches Deidre’s ear. She hurls herself forward and the blade swinging for her neck misses by a thread. Continuing dive, Deidre rolls to her feet to confront her would-be assassin.
Stop them! They cannot be allowed to reveal our plan!
Only then does Deidre see a second assassin fleeing to the door. As the assassin nearest her raises his blade again, Deidre spreads her arms wide and shouts, “STOP!” Paralyzed, the fleeing assassin’s momentum pitches him to the floor, while the other’s attack is suspended inches from her face.
Acting swiftly, Deidre backs away from the sword wielding assassin and with another shout “Kneel!”, drives the closest assassin to his knees. The one nearest the door, shakes off his paralysis and resumes his sprint to freedom, almost out the door when a looming shadow detaches from the wall and reveals itself to be a giant. The assassin tries to evade in the incoming club, but the giant is canny and with a single awesome blow, drives the assassin back 10 feet into the hard stone wall, where he collapses in a pile of shattered bones and blood.
Kill him! Kill him now! He must DIE! DIE! DIE!
Deidre suddenly becomes aware of having raised her right hand and the corona of fire that surrounds it. Pointing her flaming hand at the still kneeling assassin, Deidre screams “DIE!” in time with the wheel’s voice and two rays of black fire blaze from her hand and strike the assassin. The assassin is hurled back by the twin blasts and is torn apart by the dark energy.
Deidre nearly collapses on the altar, so drained is she by the fear and the power that she wielded yet exultant that she survived.
The power is my gift to you, Daughter – Power enough to match and overmatch Scarlet and to bind Faisal to you forever! Do my final bidding and you will have your heart’s desire for eternity!
With that, the flames reverse their rotation and return to the candles as Deidre regains her feet and collects her gifts from her Goddess.
I won’t let her down and Faisal will be mine forever!
“Take these bodies and dispose of them – discretely- and I will see to the rest.”
As she ponders how to replace the urns, and explores her new powers, Deidre discovers that one of her gifts will make it easier than she feared. With a thought, Deidre fades from the giant’s view. Looking confused, the giant hears Deidre’s laughter fading into the night.
