“And Dorian told me about how you were right in the midst of the battle, protecting the soldiers and blowing up the enemy!”, exclaims Abigail, almost bouncing with energy. “It sounds so exciting!”
Scarlet is about to speak when a frantic pounding rattles the chamber door. Barely waiting for her acknowledgement, a soldier bursts in. “Your grace! You are needed out front immediately!”
As the priestess and her sister hurry behind the guardsman, she can hear the growing sound of angry voices and shouting. Reaching the front doorway, they find a handful of guardsman forming a line, halberds lowered to keep back a crowd of several dozen angry citizens. The young men look frightened, despite facing an unarmed mob, many of the long blades shaking in their hands.
Shouts rise up from the crowd, their anger and outrage clear.
“…can’t keep the Oracle locked up!”
“Maybe they’ve already killed her!”
“Release the Oracle!”
“Everyone knows the Duchess hates her!”
Warden Kesten stands behind the men, exhorting them to stand firm. A red blur sails up from somewhere in the crowd, the tomato splattering on the burly man’s armor. “Disperse and return to your homes!”, he shouts to the crowd. “You have no business here! Leave, or we will use force!”
As Scarlet emerges from the portal, the intensity of the angry shouts rise up.
“There she is!”
“She attacked the Oracle!”
“It’s all her fault!”
Several more projectiles clatter and splatter amidst the small group at the door. An errant rock catches one of the guardsmen in the forehead, and the boy slumps to the ground unconscious. Kesten growls and draws his sword, stepping into the gap himself.
Scarlet heaves a frustrated sigh and rushes to the unconscious soldier lying on the floor.
With a gentle touch to his forehead and a simple prayer to her goddess, he awakes and she helps him to his feet.
Scarlet immediately strides towards Kesten and ushers him out of the way to step in his place. She then raises her hands and begins to address the mob.
“Enough!! No need to get up and arms. These poor men have done no wrong but simple perform their duties protecting me and putting their life on the line to defend our city. I only ask you be civil and show them the respect they deserve. In return, I will be more than happy to answer your questions and address your concerns regarding the Oracle’s well being. You have my assurance that Oracle is well cared for and is placed under our protection for her safety and mine. She has fallen under a powerful compulsion spell, which we are working our hardest to lift. Let us pray for her speedy recovery. ”
